What would you tell someone who wants to become a JW?
by slimboyfat inwhat would be the most important things you think someone should be aware about jws if they are planning on getting baptised as a jw?
imagine you are on a plane and get talking to the person next to you.
you find out they are considering becoming a jw but they are not sure.

I'd tell them that every single non-JW friendship and relationship they have currently, friend and family alike, is in serious jeopardy should they become a JW. Even JW friendships are contingent on them being a regular and active Witness for the remainder of their lives. Vacations and leaves of absences are not allowed in regards to being an active JW. You are expected to be preaching their word until you draw your last breath.

Why do they call it the New World Translation?
by Tameria2001 indoes anyone know why the watchtower named their bible the new world translation of the holy scriptures?
it's been awhile since i have even had any of their books in my home, and most of the time i don't think about it.
i don't know why, but when i think of that title, the phrase new world order keeps popping up in my mind..

I have always understood the 'New" part of the title to refer to the new understanding and Christian fundamentalism that CT Russell set in motion, and that this translation was in fulfillment of his original ideal to cleanse the scriptures of all apostasies.

People who pioneer on government assistance
by ilikecheese ini had a chat with my boyfriend about this, and he said that he knows quite a few pioneers who are capable of working but prefer to pioneer with government assistance.
his thought was, "well, it's kind of bad, but at least they're doing something useful/good with their time.
" i know from reading this board that it's a pretty widespread thing.

We had 'pioneer subsidation', both from governmental sources and internally. I lived in an area that was economically depressed, and the choice was to either move into the city and work or stay at home and pioneer. It was a filtering process to see which ones stayed and which ones left. In many cases the ones who left were more loyal JWs, whereas the ones who had stayed and pioneered were typically listless and lazy.

As someone always told me, 'You're an adult now, so go make an adult decision'. The best advice sometimes is what you give yourself. If the job makes you that miserable, then the prudent thing would be to separate yourself as much as possible from the source. Only you know the mental anguish of what you are feeling inside.

Soliciting for money on this site is NOT acceptable
by Simon inpming other members of this site asking for money is unacceptable and will not be tollerated under any circumstances, especially if it seems like you are targeting someone who seems to be especially kind and maybe a little old.
that is low.. if you do this, you will be classified as a scammer and your account deleted.
i don't care what the reasons given are.. if someone offers money then fine although i'd warn anyone against falling for sob-stories they read on the internet.

I've never been scammed, but I am still waiting for my $5000 check from Bill Gates for sharing his link on Facebook. Bill, if you are out there, please PM me!

Irony of Ironies: THE WATCHTOWER WILL END LONG BEFORE THE WORLD DOES!
by steve2 ini was recently acquainted with the exhaustive - and blatantly inaccurate and crazy - theorizing by a "dr thomas", the "founder" of the christadelphians.. he was an earlier "contemporary" of chuck russell - and some have accused russell of "stealing" the christadelphians main teachings.
they're probably correct in their accusation.
christadelphians do not believe in the trinity or hellfire, are conscientious objectors who do not vote and who hate catholicism and are scathing in their views of christendom - although like all "decent" religious groups, jws included, have toned down their rabid attacks on other religious groups in recent decades.. dr thomas's quaint - and hilariously self-important - interpretation of scripture, led him on several occasions to predict the end of the world in his own day.

The human spirit is fragile and easily manipulated. Just ask parents whose child has just died. There will always be a market for such fantasies as the JW ideal as long as they are packaged within a wipespread and well-known faith such as Christianity. If the masters in Brooklyn had any sense, there would be a movement toward modernisation and mainstream Christianity in order to remove the reputation of cultishness and general oddity that people think of JWs. The leadership has never looked too far round the corner and have run their sect like the end was always coming in a few years. Even groups such as the Anglicans and Lutherans who have had notorious difficulty in retaining parishioners in their countries of origin are thriving elsewhere. JWs are not too different, instead they are fortunate enough to have roots in North America where secularism isn't as advanced as it is elsewhere.

That family has plenty of non-JWs who would be more than willing to take care of those children. Only the mother and the oldest sister still are JWs. Didn't Tito's kid win co-guardianship over them? If Grandma's making them go to the Hall and service, then by all means separate from her. But the whole situation regarding their birth mother is just strange. By all accounts it seems that she was married to Michael for the express purpose of giving him a child, and when she couldn't have any more her usefulness expired. She seemed more than willing to give up all parental rights and have no contact with those children in exchange for a generous divorce settlement from Michael, and/or a monthly stipend. Based on her previous behaviour, I'm afraid the extravagant child support money that the estate provides to whoever is taking care of those children is Debbie's motivating factor here. I hope I am wrong and Ms. Rowe is trying to make up for abandoning her children in exchange for money so many years ago.

Freeminds 2.0 has launched
by Dogpatch intoday we are launching freeminds2.org.
this is stage 3 of a three part project spanning over 30 years since i left watchtower headquarters in 1980 and gave the 18 members of the then-governing body, including president nathan knorr and vice-president frederick w. franz.. the new site will be more blog/news oriented (and updated more often with articles, blogs and videos almost daily).. all of our previous sites, such as armageddonokies.com and watchtowerworld.org, randytv.com, exjws.net, and others will be incorporated into the previous freeminds site, which is currently being revised and converted from its joomla-based format to this wordpress format.
i am sure you will find it much easier to search for words, people, articles, and subject very easy.

What is the most damning watchtower publication?
by zound ini want to purchase a couple of vintage watchtower publications to help in my helping jw's break free.
some of the older ones are expensive or hard to come by - i know you can buy them on cd's but i'd like to own one or two of the "classics of propaganda"- some of the ones that speak for themselves as to the ridiculousness of this religion.. of course any magazine i pick up today speaks to me of the ridiculousness, but you need something much more hardcore for the jw's.. any recommendations?.
"children" has some pretty good quotes in it..

Revelation - It's Grand Climax At Hand! was the publication that stumbled me the most. I could never get my head around the seven trumpet blasts in the Apocalypse being a series of JW conventions in the 1920's.
